School on
Number Theory and Random Matrix Theory

May 30 to June 3, 2006

at the

University of Rochester, Rochester, NY, USA

organized by

David Farmer, Steve Gonek, and Chris Hughes

In recent years there has been an exciting cross-fertilization between the areas of Analytic Number Theory and Random Matrix Theory. Methods from each field have led to important insights and, sometimes, surprising advances in the other. The purpose of this school, sponsored by the University of Rochester, the American Institute of Mathematics, and the National Science Foundataion, is to provide students with the necessary background in number theory and random matrix theory to understand the basics in these two areas and their overlap, and to begin research.

A partial list of topics to be covered is:

There will be some emphasis on how to work with various objects. For example, how to find the rank of an elliptic curve, compute a 1-level density, and generate a random matrix.
