Workshop Announcement: ---------------------------------------------------------------- Trisections and low-dimensional topology ---------------------------------------------------------------- March 20 to March 24, 2017 American Institute of Mathematics Research Conference Center San Jose, California http://aimath.org/workshops/upcoming/trisections ------------ Description: ------------ This workshop, sponsored by AIM and the NSF, will be devoted to a new perspective on 4-dimensional topology introduced by Gay and Kirby in 2012: Every smooth 4-manifold can be decomposed into three simple pieces via a trisection, a generalization of a Heegaard splitting of a 3-manifold. The theory of trisections has expanded to include the relative settings of surfaces in 4-manifolds and 4-manifolds with boundary, and tantalizing evidence reveals that trisections may bridge the gap between 3- and 4-dimensional topology. The workshop is organized by David Gay, Robion Kirby, Jeffrey Meier, and Alexander Zupan. For more details please see the workshop announcement page: http://aimath.org/workshops/upcoming/trisections Space and funding is available for a few more participants. If you would like to participate, please apply by filling out the on-line form (available at the link above) no later than September 20, 2017. Applications are open to all, and we especially encourage women, underrepresented minorities, junior mathematicians, and researchers from primarily undergraduate institutions to apply. -------------------------------- AIM Research Conference Center: -------------------------------- The American Institute of Mathematics (AIM) hosts focused workshops in all areas of the mathematical sciences. AIM focused workshops are distinguished by their emphasis on a specific mathematical goal, such as making progress on a significant unsolved problem, understanding the proof of an important new result, or investigating the convergence between two distinct areas of mathematics.
