We call GL(2) L-functions those Dirichlet series with functional equations and Euler products each of whose factors is the reciprocal of a degree two polynomial in . These are associated with (i.e. their coefficients are the Fourier coefficients) of cusp forms on congruence subgroups of which are eigenfunctions of the Hecke operators and of the Atkin-Lehner operators (newforms).
