Understanding and framing research on systems in K-16 mathematics
at the
American Institute of Mathematics, Pasadena, California
organized by
Nathan Alexander
This working group, sponsored by AIM and the NSF, will engage an interdisciplinary community of scholars to understand and frame research on "systems" in K-16 mathematics education. The group will focus on framing K-16 mathematics education systems, generating priorities for system-wide changes, and exploring the role of critical research on systems in mathematics education while bridging research and practice. Some key topics will include positionality and privilege in higher education, local and community-based partnerships, and communities of diverse scholars engaging in systems-oriented work. Through collaborative discussions and activities, participants will work towards identifying practical approaches to effect meaningful change across the mathematics education landscape, emphasizing the role of research on institutions. The ultimate goal is to produce a publicly available document summarizing current knowledge and recommending approaches for future research and implementation work in K-16 educational systems, aligning with broader efforts to improve mathematics education and enhance perspectives on student learning and development.
This working group originated in work begun at the NSF INCLUDES-sponsored AIM workshop, Toward a Shared Vision for Supporting the Mathematics Identities of Students and Educators from Historically Underrepresented Communities.
