EDGE@ISU Presents Mathematics and Statistics Opportunities for Undergraduates Conference
On November 12, 2011 EDGE@ISU hosted the conference Mathematics and Statistics Opportunities for Undergraduates.
This conference introduced undergraduate students in
mathematics and statistics to paid opportunities for summer research
and
graduate school in mathematics and statistics. Activities at the
conference included: panel
discussions such as summer research experiences for undergraduates,
preparing to apply for graduate school, and life in graduate
school; short research talks for a general audience by
undergraduates and graduate students, and a mentoring lunch with
graduate students and
faculty from the Mathematics and Statistics departments.
The Iowa EDGE Mentoring Cluster, EDGE@ISU, is part of EDGE (Enhancing Diversity in Graduate Education),
a national program whose goal is strengthening the ability of women
students, especially those in
minority groups, to successfully complete graduate programs in the
mathematical sciences. Thia conference is also supported by
funding from an ISU Women's mini-grant and the ISU Departments of
Mathematics and Statistics. Although much of the
emphasis of this conference is on encouraging women to pursue
mathematics or statistics,
men are also welcome to participate.
