Mathematics in the time of MOOCs

February 6 to February 8, 2014

at the

American Institute of Mathematics, Palo Alto, California

organized by

Petra Bonfert-Taylor, John Chadam, and Jim Fowler

This workshop, sponsored by AIM and the NSF, will discuss best practices and resources for creating online mathematics content for MOOCs and devise strategies for building an online mechanism for sharing these ideas. At present there is a great deal of optimism, as well as concern, within the mathematics community about the growing presence of MOOCs. The workshop will provide a venue for those who are creating or planning to create MOOCs in mathematics to plan future courses, integrate course content, share course data, share technical, conceptual and assessment ideas, and review content. The overarching goal is to accelerate and optimize MOOC content creation. This is the first in what we hope will be a series of workshops.

Specifically, the main topics for the workshop are:

  • sharing and recording best practices for creating math MOOCs,
  • planning courses, perhaps with multi-institution collaborations, and
  • considering the creation of an open repository for MOOC content.

The workshop will differ from typical conferences in some regards. Participants will be invited to suggest open problems and questions before the workshop begins, and these will be posted on the workshop website. These include specific problems on which there is hope of making some progress during the workshop, as well as more ambitious problems which may influence the future activity of the field. Lectures at the workshop will be focused on familiarizing the participants with the background material leading up to specific problems, and the schedule will include discussion and parallel working sessions.

The deadline to apply for support to participate in this workshop has passed.
