Web accessibility of mathematics

This workshop, sponsored by AIM and the NSF, will be devoted to bringing together a diverse group of players in the field of accessibility to address the barriers that impede development and adoption of accessible web content for mathematics, particularly math education. Through informal presentations, brainstorming sessions, and focused coding efforts, we hope to build better connections among existing assistive technologies, as well as identify potential improvements to the underlying standards and frameworks.
The main topics for the workshop are:
- Improve interoperability among existing tools,
- Enhance tools to more consistently handle existing standards,
- Offer improvements or extensions to the current standards, and
- Refine authoring tools to support accessible math.
The workshop will differ from typical conferences in some regards. Participants will be invited to suggest open problems and questions before the workshop begins, and these will be posted on the workshop website. These include specific problems on which there is hope of making some progress during the workshop, as well as more ambitious problems which may influence the future activity of the field. Lectures at the workshop will be focused on familiarizing the participants with the background material leading up to specific problems, and the schedule will include discussion and parallel working sessions.
