MetaMath: Modeling the mathematical sciences community using mathematics, statistics, and data science

December 8 to December 12, 2025

at the

American Institute of Mathematics, Pasadena, California

organized by

Ron Buckmire, Katherine M. Kinnaird, Drew Lewis, and Andrés R. Vindas Meléndez

This workshop, sponsored by AIM and the NSF, will bring together researchers from across the mathematical sciences to apply a broad range of mathematical, statistical, and data science tools to study the mathematical sciences community, with a specific focus on promoting equity. The workshop will include both researchers currently working in this area, as well as researchers new to the field interested in applying their expertise to this area.

The main topics for the workshop are

  • Developing MetaMath as an example of quantitative justice research, which uses mathematical, statistical, and computational methods to investigate the mathematical sciences community.
  • Catalyzing research collaborations aimed at using data to answer questions about the mathematical sciences community.
  • Exploring the variety of mathematical, statistical, and data science techniques that can be applied to gain insight into the systems and structure of the mathematical sciences community.

This event will be run as an AIM-style workshop. Participants will be invited to suggest open problems and questions before the workshop begins, and these will be posted on the workshop website. These include specific problems on which there is hope of making some progress during the workshop, as well as more ambitious problems which may influence the future activity of the field. Lectures at the workshop will be focused on familiarizing the participants with the background material leading up to specific problems, and the schedule will include discussion and parallel working sessions.

Space and funding is available for a few more participants. If you would like to participate, please apply by filling out the on-line form no later than July 8, 2025. Applications are open to all, and we especially encourage women, underrepresented minorities, junior mathematicians, and researchers from primarily undergraduate institutions to apply.

Before submitting an application, please read the description of the AIM style of workshop.
